The City of Lytton has been selected to receive $300,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds by the Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) to help cover about half the cost of upcoming wastewater system improvements. Region XII Council of Governments Regional Planner, Alex Foley, helped author the grant application. He explains the scope of the planned work.
Foley notes the main was built around six decades ago and likely would have eventually encountered a complete failure due to its age.
The project’s total estimated cost is around $600,000. While not an enormous figure when compared to other wastewater projects in the area, Foley says it can still leave quite a dent in a smaller city’s budget without some form of outside funding.
The reminder of the funds will be sourced from the city’s sewer fund and $40,000 allocated to Lytton in the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). The project’s environmental impact assessment is currently underway and will need to go through two, 15-day public comment periods before the funds can be released. Foley anticipates construction will begin no later than this summer.
