Joan Irene (Duling) Olesen Strautman, age 82, of Carroll, IA, and formerly of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, January 14, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids with John Kult officiating. Organist for the service will be Lula Garnes and soloist will be Cindy Seastrom. Casket bearers will be Jacob Schroeder, Lucas Schroeder, Michael Schroeder, Jordan Schechinger, Steven Schon, Dalton Helmkamp, Aaron Schopp, and Randy Bruening. Burial will be in the Orange Township Cemetery near Coon Rapids.
Visitation will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday evening. The casket will be moved to the First United Methodist Church at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M.

Joan was born on November 29, 1939 at her family’s home in Coon Rapids. She was the daughter of Martin and Mildred (Wood) Duling. She graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1958 and then attended the Antonian School of Nursing in Carroll earning her LPN degree. She worked at St. Anthony Hospital for many years, and she also worked at the Bayard Care Center. Joan was married to Jens Olesen on June 1, 1958 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids where they raised their three daughters: Christine, Julie, and Dawn. Her husband Jens passed away in May of 1974. Joan continued to live on their acreage where she raised her family and continued to run their hog operation. She was later married to James Strautman on May 10, 1987 on her acreage. Jim and Joan made their home in Carroll and she worked at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids and Jim operated Strautman Tree farm near Ames. Joan enjoyed working in her yard and planting flower beds and helping Jim tend to trees. She also enjoyed genealogy, tracing her family back many generations. Joan loved to go to Okoboji, eat nutty bars, ride in the Jeep with the top off, and going to Hickory Park in Ames, always having desert first. She adored her puppy Teddy.
Joan is survived by her three daughters: Christine Schon (Jim) of Glidden, Julie Schroeder (Allan) of Rural Coon Rapids, and Dawn Helmkamp (Jeff) of Carroll; nine grandchildren: Melanie Schopp (Aaron), Jacob Schroeder (fiancée Victoria Luna), Jennifer Schon, Steven Schon (Bridget), Lucas Schroeder (Theresa), Michael Schroeder (fiancée Traci Becker), Hollie Schechinger (Jordan), Elle Helmkamp, and Dalton Helmkamp; ten great-grandchildren: Nevaeh, Hunter, Logan, Jordan, Mylah, Asher, Abbott, Madi, Brody, and Annlyn; a sister-in-law Leah Duling and a brother-in-law Pedro Hernandez. Joan is also survived by Jim’s children and their families: Janice Stoffel (Bill) of Dubuque, Mary Jo Jeffers of Chicago, James Strautman Jr. (Carol) of Carroll, John Strautman (Kate) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Patricia Strautman of Dubuque, Ellen Johnson (Larry) of Des Moines, and Catherine Kaiser (Kenny) of Ankeny; Jim’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many other extended family members and good friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents Martin and Mildred Duling; her son Ronald Steven Olesen in infancy; her sister Marilyn Hernandez; and her brother Martin Duling; her sister Phyllis Onnen (Ron); her husband Jens Olesen; her husband Jim Strautman; and her beloved grandmother Ella (Bliss) Wood.
