The Iowa House of Representatives has approved a bill that would prohibit transgender girls from participating in girls sports and is awaiting a vote in the Senate. In his weekly newsletter, District 12 Senator, Craig Williams of Manning, is backing the proposed legislation, saying, “This bill is not attacking anyone or their identity. It simply observes the biological differences between males and females and ensures all athletes have an equal opportunity to accomplish their athletic goals.” The bill passed in the House on a party-line vote, 55-39. Democrats opposed the bill, claiming the proposal is discriminatory and further alienates transgender children. Those in favor of the bill argue it is the only way to stop girls from being forced to compete against males who identify as females. Gov. Kim Reynolds has already expressed support for the proposed legislation and will likely sign if it receives Senate approval.
