Albert “Al” Frank Anthofer, age 86, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022 at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines surrounded by his family.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 Holy Spirit Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll with Fr. Kevin Richter as Celebrant. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit Choir with Kathy Halbur as pianist. Lector and Eucharistic Minister for the Mass will be Jo Ann Brincks. Gift bearers will be Al’s granddaughters Taylor Escobar, Riley Anthofer, and Laney Anthofer. Casket bearers will be Colby Anthofer, Curt Scott, Duane Anthofer, Dave Anthofer, Rick Anthofer, and Tom Reiling. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll after 5:00 P.M. on Monday where there will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 5:30 P.M. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9:30 A.M. on Tuesday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M.

Al was born on June 18, 1935 near Dedham, IA, he was the son of George and Alice (Skalla) Anthofer. He grew up on a farm near Coon Rapids where he attended school. Al was drafted into the United States Army in 1958 serving two years. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended a tool and die school in Austin, MN. He moved to Omaha and worked at Tip Top Products and then Western Electric for 14 years as a tool and die maker. Al was married to LaVonne Schlerman on May 1, 1965 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Maple River by Fr. P.M. Mattes. They lived in Omaha until 1975 when they moved back to Carroll where Al began working for General Electric until its closing in 1998 when he retired. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Knights of Columbus. Al and LaVonne traveled to Alamo Palms, Texas with their camper for ten years where they made many good friends. He enjoyed going for walks, camping, Polka dancing, bowling, and watching sports. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Al is survived by his wife LaVonne of 56 years of Carroll; his three children and their families: Mark Anthofer of Kansas City, MO; Karen Sommer (Jim) of De Soto, KS, Brian “Butch” Anthofer of Kansas City, MO; four grandchildren: Taylor, Riley, Colby, and Laney; two step-grandchildren: Nakita Dixon (Dylan) and their children Koa and Enika, and Derek Sommer; four sisters: Teresa Linsheid (Allan) of Mesa, AZ, Irene Scott of Coon Rapids, Betty Hatton (George) of Elk River, MN, and Joyce Schmidt (Ken) of Juneau, WI; a sister-in-law Rita Anthofer of Coon Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Al was preceded in death by his parents George and Alice Anthofer; his father and mother-in-law Greg and Leona Schlerman; two sisters: Bernie Reiling (Ray) and Clara Anthofer; and four brothers: Joe Anthofer (Lois), Ed Anthofer (Bonnie), Ron Anthofer, and Leonard Anthofer; and a brother-in-law Jack Scott.
