Spring Is Here, But Cold Water Still A Danger For Iowa Paddlers

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) encourages paddlers to take extra precautions if they plan to take their kayaks or canoes out onto the state’s many waterways in the coming weeks. While air temperatures might be warming up, water temperatures remain at potentially dangerously low levels. DNR River Programs Water Train Coordinator, Todd Robertson, says, “We have not had enough consistently warm days to raise water temperatures. Cold water shock and hypothermia can set in quickly if you are not dressed properly and fall into the cold water, so dress for a swim.” They remind paddlers to wear their life jackets at all times while on the water and bring a dry bag with a cell phone, weather radio, and an extra set of clothes to change into if you get wet. Officials recommend paddlers plan as if they will be in the water at some point and consider wearing a wet suit on their travels. And regardless of temperatures, always tell a friend or loved one where you will be going and check your gear thoroughly for holes, tears, or leaks before setting off.
