Officials with the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) have released the agenda for the first meeting of a committee appointed to review complaints filed by parents concerned by materials found within the high school library. The committee consists of a Heartland AEA media specialist, licensed staff from CCSD, high school students, and community members, who will recommend to the board if the 10 books named in the complaints should remain on the library’s shelves. The complainants claim the overtly graphic sexual depictions contained in the books serve no educational purpose, and student access to them should be restricted. The 12-member board, including alternates, meets Monday, Oct. 24 at 5 p.m. at the Carroll Middle School Media Center. The committee will appoint a chairperson and secretary, review and discuss the initial complaint forms, and designate a review process and timeline. School board-appointed committee meetings are held in open session, but there is no time set aside for comments from the public.
