The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Reconsideration Committee met last week as they began what could be a lengthy process to review complaints about books in the school’s library. The 12-person committee, which consists of AEA media specialists, district educators, community members, and high school students, convened Monday, Oct. 24 for their first meeting. The group appointed a chairperson and secretary and reviewed the complaint forms that led to the committee’s formation. Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau outlines the committee’s responsibilities during this process.
It is unclear how long it will take for the committee to review all 10 books. Berlau notes these individuals volunteer their time to serve in this role. They intend to review them as quickly as possible, but it could take some time. They are beginning with the novel “Sold” by Patricia McCormick, which contains graphic descriptions of human trafficking in India. Berlau says they will then make a recommendation to the board of education once it has been reviewed and discussed.
According to Berlau, the complaints received were all in reference to materials found in the library, but at least one of these books has appeared in a sophomore-level English syllabus. Parents were notified in advance by the instructor that these books were in the curriculum but did not specify that they contained potentially offensive content. Berlau says the committee’s recommendation may have an effect in the classroom as well.
The committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7. An agenda has not been released, but Carroll Broadcasting will bring you more information when it becomes available.
