Mary Jo Toms of Glidden

 Mary Jo Toms, age 60, of Glidden, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2022 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll surrounded by her family.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, November 4, 2022 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Glidden with Fr. Kevin Richter as Celebrant.  Lector for the Mass will be Sandy Johnston.  Eucharistic Minister will be Annie Johnston.  Gift Bearers will be Mary Jo’s grandchildren.  Mass servers will be Brileigh Bock and Lauren Klocke. Casket bearers will be Mary Jo’s co-workers from the United Bank of Iowa.  Burial will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.

   Mary Jo was born on February 27, 1962 in Carroll, IA, and she was the daughter of Joe and Ruth (Gregory) Johnston.  She grew up in Glidden where she graduated valedictorian from high school in 1980.  She graduated summa cum laude at AIB in Des Moines and returned to Glidden.  She began working for First National Bank in 1982.  Mary Jo had a 40 year career with the bank which is now the United Bank of Iowa.  She was married to her high school sweetheart Rick Toms on July 4, 1980 at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Glidden.  Mary Jo was a lifelong member of St. Elizabeth Seton Parish where she taught CCD, was a member of the church choir, and the church guild.  She was treasurer of Glidden United Charities for many years.  Mary Jo was an avid Candy Crush player attaining the level of 7,114 never spending a dime.  She also enjoyed trivia, playing Wordle, and shopping, shopping, shopping.  Mary Jo was a devoted and loving grandmother and cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren.

     Mary Jo is survived by her husband Rick of Glidden; her three sons and their families: Andy Toms (Diana) of Glidden, George Toms (Victoria) of North Dakota; and Alex Toms (Mandi) of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Summer, Ayla, Simon, Adele, Colton, and Calvin; her mother Ruth Johnston of Glidden; two brothers: Tom Johnston (Sandy) of Land O Lakes, FL, and Gary Johnston (Amy) of Ankeny; two mothers-in-law: Ruby Reinhart of Scranton and Sandi Toms of Glidden; a brother-in-law Johnny Toms (Cathy) of Glidden; two sisters-in-law Lori Kinman (Shawn) of Norwalk and Dianna Ohnemus (Joe) of Norwalk; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other extended family members.

    Mary Jo was preceded in death by her father Joe Johnston; father-in-law John Toms; and father-in-law Keith Reinhart.
