Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education had mixed positions on whether some reading material should stay in the district. At Monday’s school board, they read a recommendation about three books flagged for their graphic content. The books being questioned were by the same author, “A Court of Thorn and Roses,” “A Court of Mist and Fury,” and “A Court of Frost and Starlight,” all by Sarah Maas. Superintendent Dr. Casey Berlau read off the reconsideration committee findings.
Before the board voted on the books, Board Member Karen Friedlein questioned what restricting a book in the district meant. Berlau says that could mean many things.
The board voted four to one to keep A Court of Thorn and Roses and A Court of Frost and Starlight, with Friedlein being the lone no vote. The board then voted on the third book, passing on a three to two vote, with Friedlein and Board Member Duane Horsley being the no votes. So far, all books brought up for review have stayed within the district. Full audio from Monday’s CCSD Board of Education Meeting can be found included with this story on our website.
