Unemployment rates in the listening area ticked higher across the region to begin the year, according to Iowa Workforce Development (IWD). All seven counties saw increases from December 2022 to January 2023. Carroll County recorded the lowest rate for the region at 2.3 percent, a 0.4-point jump from the prior month but 0.2 points lower than last year. Greene County’s rate also climbed 0.4 points to 2.4 percent, a minor improvement from 2022. Audubon County saw a more substantial increase, rising from 1.9 percent unemployment to 2.6 percent starting the year. Calhoun County ticked higher by 0.1 points to 2.7 percent, while Sac County jumped 0.8 points to 3.2 percent, Guthrie by 1.3 points to 4.2 percent, and Crawford by 0.6 points to 6.6 percent. While unemployment climbed throughout the region, five of the seven local counties remained below the rates seen in January 2022.
