The Audubon City Council has approved the installation of new trail signs and a bike parking station at a meeting earlier this week. Audubon County Economic Development (ACED) approached the council in April seeking approval to expand trails within the community. According to City Clerk, Joe Foran, officials decided in June they would instead create bike lanes on existing roadways and mark the paths with signs. He says they voted to move forward with the project on Monday.
He notes that they may wait to install them until next year if the weather does not cooperate. Once the signs are placed, it will run from the trailhead in Albert the Bull Park and connect to the new rec center on Southside Avenue and up East Division and Broadway Streets to the downtown business district. The plans included a place for riders to park their bikes, and the council has chosen a location near the city square for that. However, Foran says it could be quite some time before it is ready to use.
The project is funded almost entirely by grants through the ACED. City officials cite the bike trail as an example of their continued efforts to provide varied and accessible recreation opportunities to the residents of Audubon and the surrounding communities.
