Over the weekend, two Carroll High School students competed in a congressional debate tournament for a chance to advance to the national competition. Sydney Bellinghausen and Maia Boell appeared in the Western Iowa District Qualifier Tournament. The students earned their spots by participating in the Iowa High School Speech Association State Debate Tournament and the Western Iowa League of Debate Tournaments during the 2022-23 season. Bellinghausen advanced to the final round in the online competition and finished third overall out of approximately 20 other competitors. As a result, Bellinghausen was selected as the first alternate in congressional debate for the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) competition in Phoenix, AZ. A photo of Boell and Bellinghausen and a list of other participating schools can be found included with this story on our website.
