Spring cleaning season is upon us, and Carroll County Solid Waste invites locals to bring any items that should not go in their regular trash bin to the free hazardous materials disposal event at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Carroll Campus tomorrow (Saturday). Commissioner Mary Wittry says most people don’t think much about what they throw into the garbage, and some of it can be dangerous.
Most hazardous materials will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, but a few exceptions exist. Live ammunition, asbestos, electronics, fire extinguishers, medications, propane tanks, and radioactive substances require additional care. Residents with these items will be instructed on properly disposing of them. Wittry says the event is free for residential customers, and participation is easy.
Agricultural or business hazardous waste disposal has a fee, depending on the items received. When in doubt about safely removing questionable material from your home, Wittry says the best practice is to call them.
Carroll County Solid Waste can be reached by calling 712-792-5001 or 515-967-5512. Their website, www.westcentralsolidwaste.com, is also an excellent resource for proper recycling and disposal practices. Again, the hazardous material drop-off runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Carroll DMACC campus.
