The Carroll City Council has approved proposed road closures in the area surrounding the Chamber Depot as the main entertainment area for the community’s overnight RAGBRAI stop on July 24. Carroll Police Chief Brad Burke outlined the area during the council’s meeting last night (Monday). It includes the space between the railroad tracks and U.S. Highway 30 from W. 6th Street to N. Main Street, the area around the Carroll Public Library/Carroll Police Department, and one block of E. 5th Street between Court and Clark Streets.
These closures will be in effect from 6 a.m. on Monday, July 24 through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 25. According to Mike Franey and Lynda Dukes-Franey, who both serve on the RAGBRAI Executive Committee, entertainment will be centered around 5th Street earlier in the day and move west as it gets later. Franey says they looked at many potential options, but this plan provides the most space with minimal impact on the rest of the community.
Most of the crowds during RAGBRAI will be gathered south of Highway 30. However, Burke says they will have one block of E. 12th Street near Northeast Park closed that day for sanitation.
During Monday’s meeting, the Carroll City Council unanimously approved the proposed road closures. A map of the planned entertainment area can be found included with this story on our website. To stay in touch with RAGBRAI preparations, be sure to visit www.CarrollRAGBRAI.com.
