Jefferson Resident Reports Nearly $2,000 Loss In E-Mail Scam

Authorities remind area residents to remain vigilant for potential scams after a Jefferson resident reported losing nearly $2,000 via a fraudulent email. According to the Jefferson Police Department, the victim contacted law enforcement Thursday afternoon. The individual told police they received an email claiming their computer had a computer virus, and the sender claimed it would cost $1,900 to remove the problem. The victim sent the payment but became suspicious when additional payment requests began arriving. Unfortunately, it is difficult, if not impossible, for law enforcement to recover money lost in these types of scams. Some clear indications of potential fraud include unsolicited contact by phone, mail, or email requesting payment via unusual means, such as pre-paid debit cards, gift cards, or money orders. Scammers are skilled at impersonating loved ones, utility representatives, or government officials. They will use high-pressure tactics to convince victims to give up their money. When in doubt, contact local law enforcement, a family member, or a friend before making a payment.
