Iowa HHS Confirms Season’s First West Nile Virus Case In NW Iowa

On Friday, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced the first case of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in the state for 2023. The infected individual is an older adult aged between 61 and 80 years from Plymouth County. The diagnosis was confirmed through a test conducted at the State Hygienic Laboratory (SHL). Last year, nine cases of West Nile virus were reported in Iowa, but no fatalities. With the arrival of warmer summer weather, Iowans are spending more time outdoors, increasing the risk of mosquito bites and potential transmission. To minimize that risk, HHS staff recommends using insect repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, Para-menthane-diol, or other similar materials. When using both sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first, followed by the repellent. Iowans are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. Wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks while outside can provide additional protection. Additionally, residents should eliminate standing water around their homes, as it serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This includes removing water from buckets, cans, pool covers, used tires, and pet water dishes.
