DNR Projects Strong Pheasant Population Leading Into August Survey

Favorable winter and spring weather conditions in Iowa are expected to have a positive impact on pheasant hunters this coming fall. According to Todd Bogenschutz, an upland wildlife research biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the DNR utilizes a weather model based on historical data and pheasant roadside population surveys to forecast pheasant population trends. The model predicts that pheasant populations for the fall 2023 hunting season are likely to be higher statewide. While northern regions faced a tougher winter with heavier snowfall, central and southern Iowa experienced more favorable conditions. The August roadside survey, scheduled between Aug. 1 and Aug. 15, will provide a more accurate assessment of upland populations for the upcoming season. Survey results will be made available online in mid-September at www.iowadnr.gov/pheasantsurvey.
