Five people were injured, three seriously, following a two-vehicle crash about two miles west of Lake City last (Wednesday) night. First responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 5:09 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 175 and Garber Avenue (County Road N33). The initial report from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office shows a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado, operated by a 14-year-old male from Auburn, was traveling northbound on Garber Avenue and failed to stop for the posted stop sign. Upon entering the intersection, the truck was struck on the passenger side by a westbound 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by 23-year-old Austin Wayne Blackman of Westside. Following the collision, the truck rolled into the north ditch and came to rest on its side. The juvenile driver and a 15-year-old male in the truck cab sustained minor injuries. They were transported to Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City for treatment. Two juveniles, a 12-year-old from Auburn and a 12-year-old from Lake City, were in the truck bed when the crash occurred. They were ejected from the vehicle, sustaining severe injuries. The two minors who were ejected were later airlifted to hospitals in Iowa City and Des Moines and remain hospitalized. Blackman also sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported to SMCH for treatment. Both vehicles were totaled in Wednesday’s collision.
