The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene of an accident on Friday, Sept. 16. At approximately 8:50 a.m. 31-year-old Bethany Jean Johnston, of Exira, was driving a 1997 Toyota westbound on 250th Street. At the same time, 75-year-old Karen Kaye Olsen, also of Exira, was travelling eastbound on 250th Street in a 2000 Ford. The two vehicles met on a one lane bridge, Johnston was already on the bridge, and Olsen was approaching from the east. The Sheriff’s Office reports an incline before the bridge prevented both drivers from seeing the other in time to prevent an accident. When the two vehicles passed, they sideswiped each other exiting the bridge. Olsen was transported to the Audubon County Memorial Hospital by Audubon Rescue after the accident. Damage was estimated to the Johnston vehicle at $3,000, while the Olsen vehicle’s damage was estimated at $2,500.
