After 10 years in the Iowa House of Representatives, Rep. Brian Best of Glidden is retiring from his service at the statehouse. Best was sworn in as the District 12 representative at the beginning of the 2015 legislative session and remained in that position until the redistricting moved him to the new District 11. Best says it was the honor of a lifetime to represent the people of western Iowa.
Retirement is something that not all politicians have the opportunity to voluntarily choose. Best says he was fortunate to decide for himself when he wanted to bring his time in office to an end.
Best jokes that he is still too young to run for president but was just ready to get out of politics. He did not close the door entirely when asked about any potential runs for office, saying the odds were one in a million that he would pursue a seat at the statehouse in the future. As chair of the House Transportation Committee since 2021, much of Best’s focus in the legislature was on transportation issues for Iowa, but his committee work also included time on the Commerce, Human Resources, Labor, Ways and Means, and Agriculture Committees. Best wrapped up his final session in the House on Saturday, April 20, but he will remain as the official District 11 representative until new officeholders are sworn in at the beginning of the 2025 session. Best will appear alongside District 6 Senator Jason Schultz of Schleswig at the Carroll Chamber of Commerce/Carroll County Growth Partnership (CCGP) Legislative Form tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10 a.m. in the Glidden Public Library.
