Guthrie County Historical Village Hosting Tour Of The Route Of Underground Railroad In Guthrie County

Picture from GCHV Facebook page: a map of the underground railroad locations in and around Guthrie County

One month from today, the Guthrie County Historical Village (GCHV) Foundation will guide individuals on a tour through Guthrie County, taking the same route as those traveling through the Underground Railroad. Rod Stanley, a retired History Teacher, and GCHV Curator Kristine Jorgensen will show attendees the hot spots of the secret passage where enslaved people from Missouri were attempting to reach Canada for freedom. Stanley says the tour takes individuals throughout Guthrie County, showing history that many people are not even aware Iowa was a part of.

There is no cost to those interested in participating, and individuals must provide their own transportation throughout the tour. The event starts on June 15 at 9:00 a.m. at the Historical Village in Panora and ends around 12:00 p.m. at Dalmanutha, just north of Casey. Directions and Maps will be distributed along with a presentation about the overall history. Stanley says each stop will be an opportunity for individuals to learn more about that spot and the role it played.

Anyone interested in registering can do so by emailing the curator or messaging the GCHV Facebook page, links have been included below. Participants are allowed to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the last stop or may leave the group to have lunch on their own. The Guthrie County Historical Village looks forward to seeing everyone and continuing to pass on the history of Guthrie County.
