Sac City Mayor Declares Proclamation As June 9th To Be Recognized As Wycoff Quadruplets Day

A proclamation has been made by the Sac City Mayor, Scott Bundt, to recognize June 9 as Wycoff Quadruplets Day. The four babies were born back in 1934, Iowa’s first set of quadruplets, to Ida and Lawrence Wycoff of Sac City. A day after a tornado tore through the north side of the town, Lester Dean, LaVerne Darlene, Lavonne Dorene, and Lorranie Delanine were welcomed by their parents and their five older siblings, along with multiple reporters and photographers from all over the U.S. Being born without the technology of today, Dr. G.H. Swearingen, took the children to his home where he built makeshift incubators, made of wooden market baskets and green light bulbs. Unfortunately, Lorraine, the smallest baby born at just two pounds, died before she turned two months old, as she was too weak. After her passing, the publicity of the Wycoff Quadruplets went away and was mainly forgotten with time. The Sac City Hometown Pride committee discovered the family’s story and brought it to the city council. After researching the history, the city council and Mayor Bundt declared this proclamation a testament to the community’s spirit’s unwavering strength, determination, compassion, and resilience. The proclamation will be framed and given to Lavonne Richardson and Laverne Staley, two of the four siblings living in Sac City, on their 90th birthday. The Sac City Hometown Pride also encourages individuals to participate in a card shower for the Wycoff siblings’ birthday. The address on where to send the cards and the entire proclamation has been included below.
