An unknown driver is reported to be the cause of an accident on Highway 71 Saturday afternoon. At approximately 2:21 p.m., the Carroll County Sheriff’s office received a report from 24-year-old Tyler James Johnston of Lake City saying he had hit a mailbox in an effort to avoid a head on collision with a vehicle in his lane. Johnston was southbound on 71, when the vehicle driving northbound entered his lane of traffic. Johnston swerved, hitting a concrete mailbox with the passenger side of his vehicle. The other vehicle was not damaged, and the driver continued on their way. There was an estimated $4,500 in damage to the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu Johnston was driving and $500 in damage to the mailbox owned by Clarise Pudenz of Carroll.
