For nearly a decade, area students and chaperones have traveled to Honduras to build homes in some of the country’s poorest regions. Organizers are planning another mission this coming spring, but this time they are planning an adults-only trip. Mike McCarty, a campus minister at Kuemper, went on his first mission trip to Honduras with a group from Gehlen Catholic in 2016 and began organizing missions out of Carroll soon after. Their next trip is tentatively slated for March 12-21, 2025. McCarty says they are looking for people interested in filling out their roster.
McCarty says it is difficult for most Americans to imagine the depth of poverty that exists in the area of Honduras they have visited.
Zach Daniel first traveled to Honduras in 2019 while a student at Kuemper Catholic and has since made two more trips. Daniel is a contractor by trade, working with his father at Lone Arrow Construction, but he says you don’t need to be a professional to contribute.
Daniel says he initially thought he would only go on the mission, but the work draws him back when the opportunity arises. He encourages anybody who might be on the fence to take the risk and make a difference.
The pair adds the trip is open to anybody from the area who has graduated from high school. McCarty says it can be a lengthy process to get everything lined up to travel to Honduras, from passport applications to recommended vaccine regimens. He recommends individuals who have questions or wish to join the March 2025 mission contact him by the end of September by phone at 712-790-2206 or email at mpmccarty@kuemper.org. McCarty says he understands not everybody can make the trip in person, but there are other ways to help. Prayers for those who travel are always appreciated, and people can always support their efforts financially via the methods included below.
