Four years and three construction phases later, the Calhoun County Conservation Board (CCCB) is ready to debut its new nature center. Phase one of the project began in early 2020, working on the exterior and roof of the building near the corner of Hwy 4 and County Road D20. Director of Calhoun County Conservation, Curtis Vanderheiden, says after the second phase of spray foaming the exterior walls, the board looked more into improving the building’s appearance and allowing staff to serve the public in more ways.
The new center will feature a sizeable educational space for programs and exhibits to be displayed, more bathrooms, updated office spaces for staff, and more. Vanderheiden says these new facilities will allow staff to host more events and education programs. But the new nature center isn’t the only thing in the works.
An open house will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend to explore the new addition, see the animal exhibits, meet the team, and witness a snake feeding at 10 a.m. Vanderheiden hopes to see everyone out for the open house and looks forward to having the community learn more about nature and conservation practices for the environment.
