A Fort Dodge woman faces a jury trial next month on two felony counts of gambling- avoiding setoff and fraudulent practice. On Dec. 30, 2022, 61-year-old Shelly Marie Esquer was at Wild Rose Casino in Jefferson when the slot machine she was playing hit the jackpot of $3,898. Esquer switched places with a friend she gambled with, having him claim the prize. Security footage was reviewed, and it was discovered that Esquer was the winner. Casino personnel requested Esquer’s identification. She claimed her I.D. was in the vehicle and proceeded to leave the premises. Esquer returned a few days later, attempting to claim the money. After running her information, it was determined that Esquer owed over $6,000 to the Iowa Setoff Program. In this program, public agencies collect delinquent debts by receiving tax refunds for individuals who owe money, casino winnings, etc. Esquer has pleaded not guilty to gambling-avoiding setoff and second-degree fraudulent practice, both class D felonies. A jury trial has been scheduled for Nov. 5. If convicted, Esquer could serve a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and $15,000 in fines.
