During its last meeting, the Halbur City Council voted and officially named the trail development west of the community the Halbur Rail Trail. After being gifted the approximately half-mile strip of land on the Halbur Ridge Wildlife Area from the Carroll County Board of Supervisors, city officials had a “name it” contest, where community residents submitted name ideas for the proposed trail development. Seventeen names were nominated, and council members each picked their top three from a list. From there, the city council voted on the name they liked the most, with Halbur Rail Trail being selected as the winner. Mayor Bryan Wittrock says, “While there is no specific timeline for the project, the city plans to create a parking area and pave the trail for residents and surrounding community members to enjoy. The trail is very scenic with trees, grass, birds, and small animals; you feel like you’re walking in the woods, yet you’re right here in town.” Halbur city officials approached the Carroll County Board of Supervisors earlier this year, requesting to transfer the land to the city, with the supervisors finalizing the land gift during their July 22 meeting.
