Jefferson Man Enters Plea Agreement After Issuing State-Wide Amber Alert For Kidnapping Son Earlier This Year

A Jefferson man has been sentenced to prison on two felony counts after kidnapping his son from school, issuing a state-wide Amber Alert and eluding law enforcement earlier this year. According to Greene County District Court records, 35-year-old Brandon Duong removed his son from the Greene County Elementary School playground at approximately 1 p.m. on Jan. 30. The seven-year-old boy was Duong biological son but was not in his custody following a December court order. After the Amber Alert was issued, Duong’s vehicle was located by Iowa State Patrol, leading into a high-speed pursuit that reached over 100 mph. The truck left the road around 5:30 p.m. near Remsen, and Duong fled with his son on foot, refusing to surrender and had a rifle in his possession. After a 2.5-hour stand-off, Duong surrendered and was taken into custody following medical treatment for minor injuries. Duong is being charged with violating a custodial order and eluding 25 mph over the limit, both class D felonies, and child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor. Duong is sentenced to serve an indeterminate term not to exceed 12 years and to pay $1,025 in fines, a 15% surcharge, and court costs. Duong has been in custody at the Greene County Jail for 272 days and will be given that credit for time served in his sentencing.
