Eight local fire departments have been selected for funding through the 2024 Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program. Area awardees include the Bayard, Deloit, Early, Glidden, Jamaica, Lake View, Westside, and Yale Fire Departments of the 138 departments selected for funding. Grants are made possible through the Iowa DNR Forestry Division, in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Services, and provide 50 percent cost-share for materials and training aimed at wildfire suppression, personal protective equipment, and communications gear. This grant program is similar but separate from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, which is still accepting applications through Friday, Dec. 20.
