A Panora man will be facing a jury trial as a habitual offender for allegedly eluding from law enforcement in Audubon County while under the influence of methamphetamine. According to Audubon County District Court records, 60-year-old Jeffery Larry Anderson was observed by an Audubon County Sheriff Deputy to allegedly travel at a high rate of speed on gravel road in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix north of Audubon on Feb. 6, 2024 at around 1:40 a.m. The deputy attempted to perform a routine traffic stop after Anderson failed to obey a stop sign at the intersection of 160th Street and Heron Avenue. Anderson continued driving at high speeds on gravel roads, reaching up to 90 mph. After the vehicle stopped, Anderson exited the car and attempted to elude on foot. Anderson was detained a short time later, but was observed to be sweating and hallucinating. Anderson was transported to Audubon County Memorial Hospital for treatment where it was discovered later by the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations lab a positive test of both methamphetamine and amphetamine. Anderson is facing charges of eluding, 25 mph or over, a class D felony and operating under the influence, first offense, a serious misdemeanor. Due to prior felony convictions out of Guthrie County for possession of a controlled substance, Anderson will be charged as a habitual offender, meaning he will be required to serve at least three years of prison time before being eligible for parole. Anderson is scheduled for a jury trial on Feb. 11. If found guilty, Anderson faces a maximum penalty of up to 6 years in prison and over $10,000 in fines.
