The City of Manson will hold a town hall meeting next Tuesday to discuss a proposed water rate increase to build up funding to continue providing residents with high-quality water. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) previously mandated that the city supply water to customers through an additional source after attempts to drill a new well failed to produce sufficient water to meet the city’s needs. The City of Manson has approximately 58,000 linear feet of a 10-inch water main being constructed, connecting to the Fort Dodge system to supply over 200,000 gallons of water daily. Manson Mayor Dave Anderson says while much of the project is being forgiven, the city will pay a large portion of the roughly $5.2 million through an SRF loan. Anderson says to be able to pay that money back, it was recommended to increase the rates.
The proposed increase will raise water rates only, from $6.40 for the first 1,000 gallons to $10.24. Each resident will be charged a minimum of $87.53 a month, which includes garbage and sewer. If passed, the rate increases will go into effect in April of 2025 and be reflected in Manson residents’ bills in June. A town hall meeting for more information has been scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall. Anderson says city officials wanted to get the information to community members before the public hearing on Wednesday.
The new rates will be comparable to surrounding cities, including Lake City, Pomeroy, and Rockwell City. Anderson encourages everyone to come out on Tuesday to have any questions answered and better understand the proposal. He wants to thank residents for understanding the need for the adjustment to continue providing safe, high-quality drinking water to the Manson community.
