Michael Schaffer of Omaha, formerly of Carroll

Michael Schaffer, 81 of Omaha, Nebraska and formerly of Carroll, died Sunday, February 23, 2025 at his home in Omaha, surrounded by his family.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 3, 2025 at Holy Spirit Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll.  The Celebrant will be Fr. Patrick Behm.  Concelebrant will be Fr. Gary Snyder.  Music will be by Jane Heithoff and Kathleen Macke.  Lectors will be Michelle Lyn Schaffer, Rebecca Schaffer, and Amy Humbert.  Gift Bearers will be Michelle Schaffer, Mark Schaffer, Marilyn Schaffer, and Matt Schaffer.    Honorary Casket Bearers will be Ethan Wise, Johathan Schaffer, Craig Quandt, Kevin Quandt, Roger Halbur, and Jane Mayer. Casket Bearers will be Paul Ludwig, Larry Ludwig, Loras Hoffman, John Thelen, Tom Snyder, Ron Mayer, Allan Hanshon, and A.J. Tayler. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

A visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a rosary at 4 p.m.  The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church on Monday morning where additional visitation will be from 9:30-10:15 a.m.

Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for a later designation.

Michael Gabriel Schaffer son of Michael and Theresa (Mayer) Schaffer was born on February 27th 1943, in Dedham Iowa.  He attended Dedham elementary /middle school and graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School in 1961.  After graduating high school, Mike worked at Witt Flooring Company and Dentlinger Construction Company. He had various hobbies including fishing, baseball, and home improvement projects. Mike met Lynette M Thelen in 1964 and were married on June 25, 1966, in Carroll, Iowa.  Mike started working for OPPD as a steamfitter in 1970; drove to Carroll Iowa and back for a year until 1971 when they moved to Omaha, Ne. Mike was a very hard worker, dedicated to his profession at OPPD and his family. Worked 32 years at OPPD before retiring in 2003.  After retirement he enjoyed several tips with Lynette including Hawaii, Germany and a cruise to Alaska.

Mike was diagnosed with MDS blood disorder in 2019.  Remained stable with no treatment needed for 3 years. In 2023 he was determined that he needed treatment tried chemo for 5 months and he was not tolerating this. In Jan of 2024, it had progressed to (AML) Leukemia. He received blood transfusions all year to maintain blood levels. Joined Palliative care November 2024 and then Hospice Feb 10 of 2025. His final wishes were to pass away at home with his family present which occurred on Sunday morning; February 23, 2025

He is survived by wife Lynette of 58 years, Michelle K of Council Bluffs IA, Mark A of Omaha NE, Marilyn A of Omaha NE, Matthew (Michelle Lyn) of Papillion, NE; two aunts, Verna Mayer and Veronica Quandt.

Six Grandchildren:  Rebecca, Jonathan, Ethan, Logann, Madelyn, and El. Other family members; brothers, sister and in laws, aunts, uncle, nieces and nephews. Along with many relatives from Arnbruck Germany.

Michael is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Theresa Schaffer; and daughter-in-law, Susan Schaffer.
