The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is once again promoting a popular, hunter-funded program that provides meat to the Food Bank of Iowa. Help Us Stop Hunger, known as HUSH, brings 81 lockers together with hunters and the food bank to grind donated deer meat into two pound packages that are then distributed to local families in need. Hunters pay a one dollar surcharge with each deer tag purchased and deliver the field-dressed deer to a participating locker. They will then be asked to fill out the HUSH card, but will not be charged any fee by the locker. The HUSH program has provided meat from more than 66,000 deer to nearly 3,400 families last year. A list of participating lockers and regulations can be found at www.iowahush.com.
