The Carroll County Recorder’s Office has seen an uptick in business since the State of Iowa mandated the reissuing of birth certificates dated between May of 1993 through October of 2009. Recorder, Marilyn Dopheide, says there were two types of certificates issued during that time period, but both are being processed for replacement. They began replacements at the end of February.
The Carroll County office is able to offer replacement for anyone born anywhere in the state during that timeframe, and Dopheide said this is a great convenience, saving many a trip to the county seat of the birth. But up until last Friday, one year—1993—had been excluded from those capabilities and the Recorder had to send the application for replacement in to the state, which could take up to six weeks for completion.
Dopheide says it is a simple process, but there are some stringent requirements.
Either parent is able to fill out the application, and Dopheide says when people arrive at the courthouse with the proper documentation, they will be leaving with a new certificate.
The service is free, as long as the original document is turned in to the Recorder’s Office. If the birth certificate has been lost, there will be a $20 fee for a copy to be issued. She also says to please allow time for application processing as they have seen visits to their office increase, issuing more than 40 last week, and it is difficult to predict a traffic pattern.
