Carroll PD Investigating Theft Of More Than $3,000 In Pre-Paid Cards From Walmart

The Carroll Police Department is investigating a theft from Walmart that occurred on Sunday, July 30. At approximately noon, two male subjects picked up two thank you cash cards and six Visa gift cards and brought them to a cashier to check out. They asked that $500 be put on each of the Visa cash cards, bringing their total transaction to over $3,000 in value. After the cards were activated, they requested the cashier get them another item, and when the Walmart employee turned their back, one of the subjects pushed the correct combination of numbers on the register to show the cards had been paid for. This caused the register to pop open and a receipt to be issued for the sale. They were then able to walk out of the door without having paid for the gift cards and without having raised any red flags with store employees. Sources outside of the police department told Carroll Broadcasting that the shortage was not realized until the drawer was closed-out at the end of the shift. Because the subjects had “inside” knowledge of how to operate the cash register, investigators have broadcast the information and surveillance video to other law enforcement agencies to see if there are other instances where these individuals have perpetrated a similar crime. This crime is considered a class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.
