IDPH Warns West Nile Virus Activity Is Increasing In Iowa

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is urging Iowans to be mindful of West Nile virus, as activity appears to be growing in the state. “Our West Nile virus numbers are increasing significantly,” says IDPH Deputy State Epidemiologist, Dr. Ann Garvey. Currently, there are 18 confirmed cases in Iowa and an additional 16 are under investigation. Two deaths have been attributed to the virus so far this season. According to the IDPH, the best ways to prevent West Nile is to eliminate carrier breeding areas and avoid contact with mosquitoes. To avoid exposure, Iowans should use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin or other similar chemicals, avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn, wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes and socks while outdoors and remove any standing water around the home. About 20 percent of people infected with West Nile virus show symptoms, which include: fever, headache, body aches and vomiting. For more information, follow the link included below this story.
