A scant two percent of corn and only one percent of soybean acres were harvested after a wet and cold week. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, comments on the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report released Monday that shows harvest is moving well behind average. “Corn harvest is now four days behind average and soybean harvest is 11 days behind,” Naig says. “With just 19 percent of soybeans harvested as of Oct. 14, farmers are having the slowest bean harvest on record. With dryer weather in the forecast, farmers will be putting in long hours to bring in the crop as quickly as possible when conditions allow.” Naig again urged everyone working on the farms or traveling on rural roadways to take the time needed to be safe during what can be “a very busy and stressful time.” Snow and rain through the week ending Sunday, Oct. 14 allowed only .8 days suitable for fieldwork with up to four inches above average precipitation in some areas. In addition to the showers, thunderstorms and snow, 10 confirmed tornadoes were reported during a two-day period. Corn conditions rated 69 percent good to excellent with soybeans landing at 65 percent good to excellent. The full report can be found through the links included below.
