The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) closed their Carroll and Spencer driver’s license stations in August of 2016, and since that time, the degree of difficulty in obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) has done nothing but increase. Iowa House Representative for the 12th District, Brian Best, says we need to do a better job in providing access for the ability to test for these licenses. Especially, he adds, when you take into consideration the number of businesses in our area that are in need of this service.
A newly introduced plan, however, has Best questioning that decision to close the rural stations.
Best recently met with Mark Lowe, current director of the Iowa DOT, to discuss a bill he is sponsoring this session.
Coordination between all transportation agencies is needed to bring solutions that offer CDL services to all residents of Iowa, Best says. And in bringing that much needed attention to the rural communities who are feeling the recent cuts more profoundly than the urban areas of the state
