Carroll County Public Health (CCPH) announced Monday a nurse from within their department has been named as its new director. Nikki Schwering, RN, started at St. Anthony Regional Hospital 10 years ago, the last nine of which were spent working in public health and home health services. She officially took over as director of both departments on Friday, Jan. 3 following the retirement of the previous director, Marcia Schaefer. Schwering says she is still settling into her new role with some guidance from her predecessor.
Schwering earned her nursing credentials from Iowa Central Community College and will be soon heading back to school for her bachelor’s degree in nursing. She says her education and experience in health sciences will prove to be valuable assets as public health’s new director, but there are some aspects of the position she will have to learn on the job.
Schwering says one of her first official acts as director will be hiring a new public health nurse for the department.
Schwering and her husband, David, have four children between one and eight years old: Kailey, Carson, Kenzie and Caden. When not taking care of cattle at their farm outside of Glidden, the family enjoys spending time together outdoors.
