Supervisors Discuss Options For Filling Treasurer Vacancy Following Seidl’s Resignation

The Carroll County Board of Supervisors opened discussions on the options available to them for replacement of Treasurer, Jean Seidl, when her resignation becomes official on July 1. Seidl resigned with two-and-a-half years remaining in her four year term. Auditor, Kourtney Irlbeck, says she has been discussing the situation with Dean Schettler on the procedural code. Their hands are tied, in some respects, because of the timing and they cannot act until the office is actually vacated. Supervisors can, however, announce their intentions.

At that Nov. 3, 2020 election, the candidate would be selected to complete the remainder of the term.

Irlbeck says it makes it harder for a Democrat or Republican to get on the ballot as they have an abbreviated time for obtaining signatures and would have to have the party convene for approval. The board can make an appointment of Seidl’s recommendation, the current Tax and Financial Deputy, Lisa Wagner. Neil Bock says that an appointment is their best choice right now.

Dean Schettler points out that they really only have two choices at this point.

If there is no appointment, the auditor would be responsible for the department’s operation. Irlbeck was asked how long they could run without a Treasurer. Her very pointed answer was zero days.

No decision was made at this week’s meeting, only that they will potentially move a meeting to June 29 to address it at that time.
