Friday is May Day and as spring plantings and yard work get into full swing, the Carroll County Recycling Center wants to help out with a green thumb’s staple—compost. Director of the West Central Iowa Solid Waste Management Commission, Mary Wittry, says they are excited to be able to bring back a popular event, their free compost day.
This was so well received they gave away about 25 tons of compost the last time they hosted the effort. Wittry says they had great reports in the fall of how this had helped area flower and vegetable gardens take off. On Friday, anyone interested in picking up free compost can head to the Recycling Center at 19111 Kittyhawk Avenue between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wittry says there are just a few simple steps in the process.
This is done on a first-come, first-served basis, and there are some restrictions.
Those participating must also be residents of Carroll County and everyone is asked to remain in their vehicle to maintain physical distancing in the efforts to keep visitors and staff as safe as possible. Wittry wants to ensure people are aware this is not bagged and it has not been certified. It is grass and leaves that have been collected through their free disposal program. This is then ground and mixed repeatedly in the center’s organic area by commission staff until it looks like black dirt. More information is available by calling the Recycling Center at 792-5001 or emailing Wittry at mwittry@carrollcountylandfill.com.
