East Sac County Board Of Education Schedules PPEL Referendum For Sept. 8

The East Sac County (ESC) Community School District Board of Education passed a resolution during their meeting last week setting Sept. 8 as the date for a voter-approved Physical Plant and Equipment (PPEL) referendum to fund a portion of the proposed $10 million in improvements and construction at two of their buildings. School officials approved a plan to switch to just two attendance centers in the district by the 2022 school year. Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, says the PPEL referendum will ease the transition if passed.

About $6 million of the project’s cost will be sourced through the one-cent Secure and Advanced Vision for Education (SAVE) tax with the remaining $4 million originating from the proposed one-dollar PPEL levy. Kruse explains what work they have planned at the two locations.

Being a PPEL, the referendum requires only a simple majority to pass. Due to current restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the district is limited in how they can provide more in-depth details about the project. However, Kruse says they are working on a way for people to visualize the final product from home.

Kruse says they are optimistic the referendum will pass, but they are prepared in the event it is not approved.

According to Kruse, the elementary building was constructed in the early 80s and the most recent additions to the high school were completed in the 1970s.
