Carroll Woman Charged With Felony Theft Granted Deferred Judgement

A Carroll woman charged with felony theft in District Court for Carroll County has submitted her guilty plea after reaching an agreement with prosecutors. According to court records, 44-year-old Christine Ann Ellis was sentenced last week for one count of second-degree theft, a class D felony. She was placed on probation to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services for three years and ordered to pay more than $2,000 in fines, surcharges and restitution. As part of the plea agreement, a $750 civil penalty was suspended and Ellis’ request for a deferred judgement was granted, meaning court records regarding the case will be expunged upon successful completion of her probation. The charge stemmed from an investigation by the Carroll Police Department, which found Ellis had written more than $2,000 in bad checks to at least eight Carroll County businesses between May 16 and July 30 of 2019.
