St. Anthony Regional Hospital has recently announced the addition of Dr. Maria Hernandez, a urogynecologist, to the St. Anthony Clinic. Hernandez specializes in women’s health issues such as: menstrual irregularities, urinary tract infections, infertility, pelvic floor disorders and reconstructive surgery as well as gynecology services and well woman exams. Hernandez comes back to Iowa and to St. Anthony from the Rocky Mountain Health Center in Layton, Utah. After receiving an undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., she completed her medical degree at the University of Iowa in 2004. She completed residency at Phoenix Integrated and a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reproductive surgery at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Hernandez is dual-board certified through the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology Female Pelvic Floor and Reconstructive Surgery. Hernandez said this has really been a homecoming for her. Her previous experience in Iowa was a great one, with a sense of community that includes great schools and exceptional health care. In addition to her passion for helping women, Dr. Hernandez is bringing a bilingual component to the St. Anthony Clinic. She said there are cultural nuances that can only be understood through familiarity with the language, and it is her hope to provide that level of understanding for our Spanish-speaking population. Dr. Hernandez and her husband Brian–who is an Oelwein native–will reside in Carroll. Hernandez is also the mother of three children, ages 17, 21 and 23 and enjoys the outdoors, gardening and cycling.
