An East Sac County Community School District senior, Maggie Gosch, is the recipient of the $2,000 2020 Star Student Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Association of School Boards and ClaimAid Consulting Corporation. The award recognizes Gosch for her academic achievements, leadership, extracurricular activities and educational goals. She is a member of the Future Farmers of America (FFA), is an honor student and works two part-time jobs. After graduation, she plans to attend Iowa Lakes Community College’s veterinary technician program and then says she wants to come back to work at a local veterinary clinic. Gosch says her special education instructor, Kevin Zehnder, had a major impact on her life. “Mr. Zehnder set a goal for me my freshman year to help improve my self-confidence and learn to advocate for myself,” Gosh says. “To achieve this goal, I took a senior-level class and was the only junior, earning a “B” grade. I was the first student in my high school with an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) to take that class. Thanks to the support and encouragement of Mr. Zehnder, I was able to excel.” Gosch went on to add she never thought college would be an option for her, but because of the guidance and support of Mr. Zehnder, she is able to pursue her goals.
