Iowa DOT Encourages Those With Expired Or Expiring Licenses To Apply For Six-Month Extension

Individuals who have had their driver’s license expire, or it will during the continued COVID-19 service disruptions, are encouraged to apply for a six-month extension. Carroll County Treasurer, Jean Seidl, says this extension will enable customers the ability to continue driving on their current license while they work to arrange a renewal appointment. The six-month extension is issued as a paper document that must be carried by the driver in conjunction with the expired license. It is applicable to licenses expiring during Gov. Kim Reynolds’ proclamation of disaster emergency, from Jan. 16 through May 27, or for customers who are temporarily unable to come to a service center due to a lack of appointment availability or health concerns. These will not be available to those with CDLs or non-operator identification cards. The extension application can be filed before or after their current license has expired, but those who are eligible are encouraged to renew their driver’s license online by following the link included below. As of yesterday (Thursday), the six-month extension option is available on the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) service selector website, a link to which is also included here. The Carroll County Treasurer’s Office remains closed to the general public. A tentative date of June 1 has been set for a re-opening of the courthouse. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call the Treasurer’s Office at 712-792-1200.
