The June 2 Iowa primaries are just under three weeks away and only a handful of the local state and county races are contested. Pastor, Heath Hansen, is one of two Republicans seeking the party’s nomination for the Iowa Senate District 6 seat. Hansen grew up on a small farm near Smithland in Woodbury County and has spent the last decade in Audubon with the Church of Christ and counseling troubled youth in Manning. Hansen says he has been considering running for the office since current Senator, Mark Segebart, announced he would not be running for reelection in 2020.
According to Hansen, Republican voters can rest assured they will have an advocate for traditional conservative values if he wins the nomination. He says his positions on key issues are made very clear in his “Pro-Life, Pro-Gun, Pro-Iowa” campaign slogan.
Hansen adds he is also interested in reexamining Iowa’s child custody laws in the event of a divorce or separation to make the process more equitable for all parties involved.
Ideally, he would like to begin work on those issues immediately, but he expects the state will need to complete much of the unfinished work from the unusual 2020 legislative session. Hansen says one of his most valuable attributes as a potential senator is his experience as a pastor and believes his Christian morals will be invaluable at the statehouse.
Like all the candidates running in the primaries, COVID-19 has forced Hansen to change the way he campaigns to a more online format. However, he is optimistic the circumstances will not hurt him at the polls, as he has been door-knocking and meeting with constituents for over a year. Voters are being encouraged by state and local officials to cast their ballots by mail this election due to the pandemic. Hansen’s only challenger is Craig Williams, an independent agriculture consultant and chair of the Carroll County Republican Party.
