If not for the quick reactions of two neighbors and two more passersby, a Friday evening fire in Carroll could have been much more devastating than the loss of property. Carroll Fire Chief, Greg Schreck, says the call came in at roughly 7:02 p.m.
Schreck says the original reports on Friday evening had three people in the house at the time of the fire, but it was only two. A five-year-old female and her grandmother, Emily Kuenepa, were in the home but did not get early notification because there were no working smoke detectors in the rental property at 120 North Court Street. A couple who has lived directly behind, at 121 North Clark Street, for about two years, 33-year-old Chris Boggs and his wife, 26-year-old Desirae, were finishing up supper when they saw something out of the ordinary.
The couple did not hear any response from inside, but as Chris came around the front, Desirae was coming out with the little girl, who was telling them her grandmother was still in the house. A nine-year-old boy who also lived at the house was across the street at the time and came over to tell her the same thing.
Matt Stork, his son and Brandon Staiert were driving around after having been out for supper. Staiert told Stork he thought he saw a house on fire. When they pulled up, Stork says Desirae was outside with the kids.
The Boggs say the fire was deafening, the roar of the blaze was all you could hear and the smoke was rolling like waves down from the ceiling into the first floor of the home; solid black and about four feet from the ceiling. This is when Chris sprang into action.
Chris says all he could think was if that was his family, he would hope that someone would do the same for him, his wife and two kids. Schreck says their intercession likely saved the grandmother’s life.
Stork agrees.
The grandmother was treated for smoke inhalation and the little girl was released that night. Chris, Stork and Staiert did inhale some smoke, but did not require treatment. Matt suffered a minor burn on his hand. Desirae says she saw a doctor the next day for minor smoke inhalation, but was cleared. The occupants of this home, which also included Ebert Marrufo and Kaychira Collazo, have lost everything. The rental house, owned by Susana Del Angel, is also likely to be deemed a total loss. The Red Cross has been called in to help and local efforts are underway to provide the family with necessary items. Details on that can be found below.
