Jack D. Smith

Jack D. Smith, age 81, of Coon Rapids IA, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at his home in Coon Rapids surrounded by his family.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids with Chaplain Angelo Luis of St. Anthony Regional Hospital officiating.  Casket bearers will be Mike King, Travis King, J.D. Smith, Zach Zahn, Ken Curnes and Kelsey Brady.  Burial will be at the Jefferson Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Monday evening.  Additional visitation will be held from 12:00 – 12:45 P.M. on Tuesday at the funeral home.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids and online condolences may be left for Jack’s family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com
Jack was born on July 31, 1937 near Scranton, IA.  He grew up in Jefferson and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956 where he played on the undefeated 1953 championship football team; and they were never scored on.  Jack was married to Linda Faaborg on November 14, 1958 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedar Fall, IA.  The couple lived in various locations including: Des Moines for 35 years, Bayard for 19 years, and they moved to Coon Rapids in 2017.  Jack was a truck driver for Colonial Bread for thirteen years and then Roadway Express until retirement.  He was involved as a city councilman while living in Bayard, he was a Lions Club member, he served as president of the Bayard Library Board, he was proud of his volunteer work to help beautify Bayard and his work with Midwest Partnership.
Jack dearly loved his family, his friends, and his beloved dog Abby.  He loved fishing, sports and always had a funny story or great joke.
Jack loved his caregivers with St. Anthony Hospice.  His wife Linda was the love of his life, and she always had an ear for his jokes and was a major part of his health care. 
Jack is survived  by his wife Linda of Coon Rapids;  their three children: Teresa Smith of  Ashville, NC, Julie King (Jeff) of Des Moines, Dan Smith (Sandy) of Ankeny; seven grandchildren: Michael King (Anna) of Newton, Shannon Smith of Waukee, Jason Weiman of Boulder, CO, Derek Weiman of Boulder, CO, Travis King (Jenny) of West Des Moines, Lexi Smith of Des Moines, and J.D. Smith of Ankeny; four great-grandchildren: Suzy, Grace, Michael James, and Charlotte; his sister Janet Scheruermann of Bagley; two sisters-in-law Marilyn Nelson of Minneapolis, MN, and Janice Bielenberg of Coon Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents Jacob G. and Hazel Ruth (Handley) Smith;  and his brothers: Ed Smith, Jim Smith, and Ronnie Smith.
